Washington is one of the few states in the US that has actually drafted and passed legislation that prohibits Internet gambling. The law, which can be found in RCW 9.46 of the state’s statutes, states that anyone who facilitates gambling over the Internet is in violation of the law. Below you can see penalties for violating Washington’s gambling laws: Misdemeanor – Up to 90 days in county jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Gross Misdemeanor – Up to one year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine. Class C Felony – Up to 5 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

Sports betting in Washington

Democratic Governor Jay Inslee signed a sports betting bill into law March 25, 2020. HB 2638 allows the state’s Class III tribal casinos to open retail sportsbooks under the authority of the Washing Gambling Commission. Each of Washington’s tribal casinos may begin taking wagers on casino property once properly licensed.

HB 2638 prohibits betting on games involving the state’s colleges and minor league professional sporting events. Betting on esports competitions or events is allowed.
