  • Hurd vs Williams (lost) Boxing main event, superwelter IBF/IBO/WBA world title fight. Hurd / Williams. Not sure why bookmakers are that confident that fight will end before the limits because honestly I am not, I think they are basing mostly on the fact that Hurd finished good level opponents like Trout or Harrison the current WBC champion.
  • I am definitely looking forward to this card. Both of these rematches will provide fireworks. Additionally, there’s betting value and potential upsets that could provide sports bettors with opportunities to make some money. With this event, and the Hurd vs Williams card on FOX, boxing fans are in for an exciting weekend of action.

Hurd vs Santana Odds. Fighter Odds; Jarrett Hurd-3000: Francisco Santana +1100: Odds taken Jan. Hurd is looking to rebound after his loss to Julian Williams in May 2019 via unanimous decision. The former IBF and WBA super welterweight champion is taking on a capable journeyman and a man who has historically competed in smaller weight.

At one point, a Jr middleweight showdown between former unified champion Jarrett Hurd and current three belt holder Jermell Charlo was the fight every fan was craving.

Roughly two years ago, both fighters were undefeated champions and regarded as the best in the division. Since then however, they have both suffered defeats. For Charlo, his came at the hands of Tony Harrison in December of 2018, although he did avenge that loss one year later. And for Hurd, his defeat came at the hands of Julian Williams in May of 2019.

Despite the speed bumps, Hurd (24-1, 16 KOs) still believes both he and Charlo are the best the 154-pound division has to offer and still desperately wants to prove that he was always better than his long-time rival.

“I really want the Charlo fight man,” said Hurd on the PBC podcast recently. “It’s still a lot of unanswered questions of who’s really the best at 154 until we face each other.”

Regardless of what he believes, Hurd knows good and well that another fighter could be prioritized before him. That would be, newly minted WBO champion Brian Castano. The Argentine native truncated the short title reign of Patrick Teixeira approximately one month ago and immediately called for an undisputed showdown with Charlo.

With the opportunity to grab every world title in the division, Charlo is most likely to go in that direction. But while Hurd is fully aware of the importance of an undisputed 154-pound champion, the Maryland native firmly believes that even a contest of that magnitude would fall short of the excitement a matchup between himself and Charlo would bring to the table.

“Even though Brian Castano has the title and it could be an undisputed champion at 154 but to be honest, the biggest fight at 154 is me vs Jermell Charlo. Hopefully, we can fight this year.”

In terms of what could possibly be next for Hurd if Charlo does elect to go down the undisputed route, the former unified champion has no idea. In fact, he isn’t even sure when he will make his return to the ring.

Whenever he does get the call though, he’s hoping that the first name presented to him will be Julian Williams.

Williams

“I haven’t gotten any exact dates but I’ve been talking to Al (Haymon). He’s trying to put me on some cards and have me as the main event. He’s trying to put something together for me but he hasn’t been able to get an exact date but he’s been telling me to just stay ready. So that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I’m just hoping that I get my rematch with Julian Williams.”

On Saturday, May 11th, Top Rank Promotions presents an exciting night of boxing action as we get two thrilling rematches live from the Tucson Arena in Tucson, Arizona. The main event of the night features a rematch between Miguel Berchelt and Francisco Vargas for the WBC world super featherweight championship. Berchelt is defending the very title that he took from Vargas two years ago.

In the co-main event of the night, WBO junior featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete will defend his belt against Isaac Dogboe in an immediate rematch of their fight last December. It was an action-packed battle that saw Navarrete come away with the UD victory.

The two main fights will air on ESPN and begin at 10 PM ET. The preliminary bouts will stream on ESPN+ beginning at 6:30 PM ET. Boxing betting sites have released their odds for this card. Let’s take a look at the betting lines, try to find any potential betting value, and KO our picks.

Isaac Dogboe (20-1, 14 KOs) vs Emanuel Navarrete (26-1, 22 KOs)

  • Isaac Dogboe (+110)
  • Emanuel Navarrete (-140)

In their first fight, Isaac Dogboe was a large betting favorite floating around a -1000 betting line depending on the sportsbook. As we all know, Dogboe ended up losing that fight via UD. For the rematch, Dogboe is the underdog for the first time since his bout against Magdaleno a year ago. In that fight, he was a +200 underdog and won via KO. The knockout victory catapulted Isaac onto the world stage.
Navarrete is a betting favorite in this fight. However, prior to their first bout, Navarrete mostly fought inferior opponents without any credible resumes. Both fighters offer betting value. Dogboe offers more value considering he’s the underdog.

Dogboe’s 2018 started off great with three wins and the upset victory over Jessie Magdaleno to capture the WBO super bantamweight title. Unfortunately, in his second title defense, Isaac lost via UD to Navarrete at the end of the year. It was Dogboe’s first career loss and he’s intent on getting revenge against Emanuel this weekend. Bad Left Hook reports that Isaac declares that he will KO his opponent this weekend:

“At my lowest point, Emanuel Navarrete couldn’t knock me out. I’m now at the peak of my fitness. Navarrete is going down. The warrior is coming! NeHo! I’m coming to knock out Emanuel Navarrete! Emanuel Navarrete, I’m back to set the record straight!”

Dogboe admits that he underestimated Navarrete in their first fight, but he guarantees that he will “set the record straight” and give the fans something to talk about for a “very, very long time.”

Emanuel Navarrete hasn’t lost in seven years. At that time, he was just 17 years old and lost via UD in a seven round fight. Since then, Navarrete has put together a solid record with a winning streak of 21 straight fights. He first fought in the United States last December against Dogboe. Their rematch will also take place in the United States.

Despite that winning streak, Navarrete wasn’t well known to the mainstream and on a bigger stage. However, put on an impressive performance against Dogboe and announced his arrival. According to Boxing Scene, Emanuel is out to prove that the first fight wasn’t an accident:

“I am ready to show the world that our first fight was no accident. I am the better fighter, and I will show that again. Dogboe made a mistake in taking this rematch.”

Will Dogboe Get Revenge?

Dogboe has all of the tools to win the fight. He’s more athletic, has a high boxing IQ and is a patient fighter. However, he is giving up five inches in height and eight inches in reach, which helped Navarrete to win the first fight. Additionally, Emanuel physically beat up Isaac in their first fight. It wasn’t a boxing clinic, it was punishment. Dogboe’s trainer believes that Isaac will have to do more than just box Navarrete. He’s going to have to show superior speed, stamina, and desire to win.

With how Navarrete looked in their first fight, it’s hard for me to think that Dogboe will be able to overcome Emanuel’s size, reach, and height advantages. This is a close fight, but I have to lean toward Navarrete winning via Split Decision.

Francisco Vargas (25-1-2, 18 KOs) vs Miguel Berchelt (35-1, 31 KOs)

  • Francisco Vargas (+600)
  • Miguel Berchelt (-1050)
Hurd vs williams odds today

Vargas comes into this rematch as a sizeable underdog after being the betting favorite in his last four fights including their first encounter. Vargas suffered the first loss of his career to Berchelt nearly two years ago. I do believe that Vargas offers some value and is worthy of a flyer. For Berchelt, he’s fought four times since the first battle between the two Mexican boxers. He was a large betting favorite in all four of those fights. I don’t believe he offers any value for this rematch.

Their first fight was awesome. It was an incredible battle of two warriors. This time around, the fans, pundits, and fighters are expecting another “Mexican war” inside the ring.

Francisco Vargas is seven years older than his opponent. He also hasn’t fought in a year, which gave him plenty of time to rest and prepare for a rematch against Berchelt who Vargas has called out every chance he had.

Vargas has solid punching power and a willingness to brawl with his foes. He doesn’t run and hide. Instead, he’s ready for war and that’s exactly what these two fighters gave us in their first match. As Vargas has repeatedly said, Mexican fighters never back down:

“I have no doubt that 2019 will be my big comeback year. The three wise men came bearing gifts, and one of them is my highly awaited rematch against Miguel Berchelt on May 11. Like I said before our first fight, Mexicans never back down, and I will show that once again in the ring.”

For Berchelt, he’s defended the belt four times since their first match. He’s scored three straight TKO wins as well. Miguel was expected to beat all three fighters, which wasn’t the case in ‘part one’ of this Mexican saga. It’s been five years since Berchelt lost a fight and he was 22 at the time. Miguel has won 15 straight fights since his only career loss and he’s looking to extend that streak to 16.

One of the best things about this in-ring rivalry is that the two men have mutual respect and prefer to let their hands do the talking and not trash each other publicly:

“There will always be a rivalry, a sporting rivalry and that rivalry remains up there in the ring, I have nothing personal against ‘Bandido’ Vargas and I do not like to talk about predictions, I prefer that to speak my fists – but I would like to get the victory by knockout and in less than 10 rounds.”

Berchelt’s goal of winning in less than 10 rounds is very ambitious. It’s also one that I don’t think will happen. Vargas is too tough and motivated to not push this bout into the championship rounds.

Who Wins Part 2?

After watching their first fight, it’s hard to pick against Berchelt. He’s young and talented. He also has the power to put down Vargas in this fight. Oddsmakers feel that Berchelt is the clear-cut favorite. I wouldn’t go that far. I do believe Vargas has a chance in this fight. I believe he is worth a flyer. With that said, I’m taking Berchelt to win this fight via UD.

Will We See Berchelt vs Farmer This Year?

If Berchelt gets by Vargas this weekend, and I think he will, Miguel wants to take on other champions in his weight class:

“What I want is to defend my title and afterwards we will see, there are great champions like Masayuki Ito, there is Tevin Farmer, Gervonta Davis. There are times when, due to promoters, the fights are very difficult to make, but I will continue to show that I am the best 130-pounder in the world.”

If Berchelt truly wants to take on Farmer, then he won’t have to work hard to make that fight happen. Farmer has already lobbied via social media to take on Miguel later this year.

That would be a highly anticipated unification bout if the powers to be can make it happen. Both fighters are interested, the fans will be interested, and I’m sure some TV or cable provider will also be interested. Could we see this fight on ESPN+?

Final Thoughts on Top Rank’s Night of Rematches

When I think about the potential of this card, I have to agree with what Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum said about the event:

“We’re all looking forward to this card. Berchelt-Vargas and Navarrete-Dogboe were incredible action fights the first time around, and the rematches will provide fireworks.”

I am definitely looking forward to this card. Both of these rematches will provide fireworks. Additionally, there’s betting value and potential upsets that could provide sports bettors with opportunities to make some money. With this event, and the Hurd vs Williams card on FOX, boxing fans are in for an exciting weekend of action. Did I mention that both of these cards are going to be free? Does it get any better than that?
